Hello to all who read this.  I've never done anything like this before but that doesn't mean I can't

As many of you now, my name is Chris Sweigard.  I work for my Mom and Dad at WBU and have since we opened in June of 2005.  I enjoy my job and I enjoy watching the birds so let's get Loggin'

3/3/10

Lots of stuff, lots of stuff... I had a Merlin winter behind my house this month.  It was a life-lister for me!  The Goldfinches are starting to turn!  bring on spring.

2/3/10

About a week and a half ago i actually had a Merlin in my yard.  I've seen her one more time since.  It was a great experience.  I actually mis ID'd it and was lucky enough to be talking w/ Sister Marty that day who corrected me.  (I thought I was looking at a female Kestrel)  The bird did exactly what the field guide said it would do.  Very Cool... you never know!

1/09/10

After a two year absence I have a Northern Flicker regularly again.  I have very few Chickadee's this winter.  I have tons of Cardinals.

11/28

Well the frosts are coming more often and the birds are eating and cacheing everything I put out.  some days, I'm going thru 10 lbs a day.

I had a great experience in the yard today.  there was a flock of migrating shore birds that flew right over my house.  it was different to say the least.

10/31

Happy Halloween!  I saw a Junco today in the yard...They migrate from the North and winter here.

9/30

I've had Bluebirds visit regularly all month long.  This has been a welcome sight in all the gloom.  Hummingbirds keep visiting every day.  In fact I had one at 6:30 AM in the fog.  It was cool.  I looked up this morning to a pair of Great Blue Herons flying by and I'll be darn if the one in the back wasn't squakin' at the leader "Slow down...Wait up...Slow Down"  I'll let you know when I see a Junco.

9/3

Just this week, I've seen 5 bluebirds, 8 turkey, and Cedar Waxwings in the yard.  Fall is falling and things are happening.  I love it.

8/2

Had a lot of Goldfinches today, and one Hummingbird.  over all the hummers are down this year in Cincinnati.

6/27

I just got back from Hilton Head South Carolina last week and I saw a great deal of birds.  among the highlights were a pair of Red-headed woodpeckers, a pair of Pileated woodpeckers and two nesting Osprey.

6/27

I've had a bluebird in the yard three times this week.  Also... I have a juvenile Robin eating bird seed?

5/5/09

After 3 years of cutting oranges to no avail I finally drew in my first Baltimore Oriole yesterday.  He came twice that I saw to feed on the orange.  A Red-bellied woodpecker is feeding regularly on them as well.

I also saw my first Hummingbird yesterday evening.  The boys scared it off as soon as I saw it so I'll be watching.

Life Lister: Sunday evening on the Miami Whitewater bike trail - Scarlet Tanager!!!

4/29

Wow!  Yesterday was a doozy.  I was up early and saw a red-fox running through  the yard.  later I saved a turtle who was caught in my fence...and finally I saw a Rose-Breasted Grosbeak in the yard!  No hummingbird yet, but others at the shop have seen them.

3/21/09

Gold Finches are changing color, red-winged blackbirds are visiting yards, and wrens, are building their nests.  Spring is coming.  Times are tough though.  I saw a robin in the bird feeder lookin' for fruit pieces

Spring is afoot.  the birds are singing alot

3/11/09

About a week ago I was riding my bike in Miami Whitewater and I saw a Bald Eagle!  I checked cincinnatibirds.com and confirmed this.  Apparently -- they're nesting somewhere in the park.

 2/11

a couple of days ago I was driving back from Columbus and I saw close to 500 Canadian Geese in formation flying North.  I was just told by a customer that they saw a Red-Winged Blackbird this week!  that means spring baby!

1/30

Well the snow is about 6" deep and that's hard on the birds.  they can't forage for the natural foods that they would normally feed on.  I recently read an article that said a birdfeeder doubles the survival rates of birds during this type of weather.  so fill those feeders.

It was an interesting snow storm in the yard.  I saw Juncos up on my hopper feeder, and I actually had one clinging to a bag of suet.  These are not the regular habits of these birds.  They're chicken scratchers and are almost always on the ground.  the other thing I noticed is that the large flocks of Starlings broke up.  I guess because; no one food source was large enough to feed them all.

before the storm I was in Colorado on a ski trip.  I got some life listers that I'm trying to identify.

stay warm.

12/23

I had a Carolina Wren, several Cardinals, Titmouse, Red-Bellied Woodpecker, Downy Woodpecker, Eastern Towhee, Chickadee, White-Crowned Sparrow, Dove's, and Junco's in the yard.  A Cardinal was eating a crabapple and the Sparrow got up on my hopper feeder.  Both events surprised me.  as I got up from the breakfast table I looked the other direction across the yards towards the woods and an eight point buck was walking out of the woods.

Cool day in the yard!

12/21/08

I woke up this morning to the bitter cold and watched a Female Red-Bellied Woodpecker defend the last few seeds in my feeder from a Cardinal.  The Cold really does make for tough times.  I filled 'em all up.

A lot of folks coming in to the shop have been noticing Carolina Wrens in their yards.  I have as well.  They really like the suet.

Happy Holidays!!

12/13/08

There are Christmas counts going on in the parks today.  I hope all who participate have fun!

12/11/08

I had 5 Tufted Titmouse eating crushed sunflower today.  They really like it,  not a lot of Cardinals in my yard right know.  No Flickers yet either.  They usually show up in my yard thanksgiving week, but no sign of them right now.

12/10/08

This past Saturday we sponsored a BirdWalk w/ The Ohio Young Birders Club at the College of Mount St. Joseph's.  It was COLD!  Thank you to Sister Marty for allowing us access to the mother house where it was warm and our coffee and donuts wouldn't freeze.  It was nice inside because we got to watch the Birdfeeders in the courtyard.  These are special feeders used to attract birds in to the courtyard for banding.

The way they band is by catching the birds in nets strung across the courtyard and then putting little bracelets on their legs.  We saw at least two birds that had been banded.  one of which was a Junco which is cool because that bird doesn't summer here in Cincy.

We did get outside as well.  The birds were slim pickin's but we managed to see a few.  some of the highlights were a soaring Red-Tailed Hawk, Kinglets, and a life lister for me a Mature Yellow-Bellied Sapsucker.

I would like to say thank you to those that led the walk and to those that participated.
